Elderly Man Arrested for Assault with Cane in Irving

On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at approximately 5:54 pm, Irving Police Officers responded to an assault call at the 200 block of E. Grauwyler Rd in Irving, near the Family Dollar store on Grauwyler Rd and Britain Rd.

Upon arrival, they found a 21-year-old black male with head injuries and bleeding. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrived to provide medical assistance to the injured man.

After obtaining a statement from the victim and speaking with witnesses, the officers located 65-year-old Alton Lynn Hughes and took him into custody. Investigation revealed that Hughes and the victim had engaged in an argument, during which Hughes punched and struck the victim with a cane, causing the wood cane to break and resulting in a laceration above the victim's left eye.

Hughes was subsequently booked into the Irving Jail and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. His bond was set at $15,000.
