Steven Mitchell, a 48-year-old resident of Dallas, has been found guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in a case presided over by lead prosecutor Alicia Patterson. The incident involved Mitchell shooting a childhood friend during a dispute over utility bills.
The trial, which saw Amanda Boylan assisting as second chair, featured investigation support from DA Investigators Victor Vasquez and Rusty Taylor, with the Dallas Police Department leading the charge.
The victim sustained a laceration when a bullet grazed the top of their head during the altercation.
In the punishment phase, the jury was presented with damning evidence of Mitchell's criminal history. It was revealed that less than a year before the shooting incident, he had completed probation for two counts of aggravated assault, assaulting a police officer, and evading arrest. Additionally, the State highlighted Mitchell's fraudulent activities, including filing false liens against his deceased mother's property, forging her signature on house deeds, and writing unauthorized checks from her account.
On March 6, 2024, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, sentencing Mitchell to 15 years in prison for his actions.
