ARLINGTON, Texas - Bob Stoops, one of the most successful head coaches in modern football history, announced Monday that he is retiring from coaching, closing the book on a career that spanned nearly five decades across college and professional football.
Stoops, the head coach of the Dallas Renegades, steps away after four seasons with the franchise, including leading the team to the 2023 XFL Championship. Over nearly 40 seasons as a head coach, Stoops compiled a career record of 207–69, cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s most accomplished leaders.
Before his time in spring professional football, Stoops spent 18 seasons at the University of Oklahoma, where he led the Sooners to a 191–48 record, 10 Big 12 titles, and the 2000 BCS National Championship. His overall collegiate and professional success made him a defining figure of his era.
In a statement announcing his decision, Stoops said the choice came after “much thought and reflection,” calling coaching one of the greatest honors of his life. He thanked the United Football League, the Renegades organization, ownership, league leadership, players, staff, and fans, while noting it was time to step away and focus on family.
“To the fans — you are the heartbeat of this sport,” Stoops said. “Your passion, energy, and unwavering support have meant the world to me.”
United Football League President and CEO Russ Brandon praised Stoops for helping build the foundation of the league and spring football, calling him “a true legend in the game” and thanking him for his leadership and character.
The UFL said an announcement regarding Stoops’ replacement as head coach of the Renegades will be made in the near future.
