Arlington, TX — The Arlington Police Department is reminding parents and guardians that keeping children safe around firearms begins with proper storage and safety practices at home.
Officials say taking simple precautions can help prevent tragic accidents and stop unauthorized access to firearms.
Police encourage gun owners to store firearms unloaded and locked in a secure location. Using trigger locks, cable locks, or a gun safe can add an extra layer of protection.
Authorities also recommend storing ammunition separately from firearms.
The department said it is important for parents to talk with children about what to do if they ever encounter a gun. Officials advise teaching children four basic steps: stop, don’t touch, leave the area, and tell an adult.
Police noted that children are naturally curious, and simply hiding a firearm is not enough to keep them safe. Firearms should always be secured and kept out of reach of children.
Residents who own firearms can also obtain a free gun lock by visiting the front desk of any Arlington Police Department station.
For additional information and resources about firearm safety around children, officials recommend visiting the Cook Children’s “Aim for Safety” program online.
Police say working together as a community can help create a safer environment for children.
