A man suspected of stealing from a Walmart in Decatur was shot and killed by police Tuesday night.
Officers responded to a theft report at the Walmart on South U.S. Highway 81/287 around 9:40 p.m. According to authorities, a 46-year-old man fled the store as officers arrived, leading to a foot chase in the parking lot. During the chase, officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.
Police provided medical aid at the scene before the man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident.
Authorities reported that another individual, believed to have been waiting for the suspect in a vehicle, fled the scene and remains at large.
In line with standard procedure, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The identities of the deceased suspect and the officers involved have not yet been released.
