Toddler Survives New Year's Eve Drive-by Shooting in Mesquite

A one-year-old child miraculously survived a gunshot wound to the head on New Year's Eve after an unidentified assailant opened fire in a drive-by shooting in the 1600 block of Springwood Drive in Mesquite.

During the incident, a man, believed to be associated with the child, sustained either a graze wound to the neck or was cut by glass. Both victims were taken to the hospital for medical attention.

According to Mesquite Police, the child's injuries were minor, and the toddler is currently recovering at Children's Medical Center Dallas.

Detectives, reviewing CCTV footage from the area, discovered a vehicle driving down the street on the night of the shooting. The footage revealed an individual exiting the vehicle and discharging a firearm. Authorities are yet to determine if the house where the victims were located was the intended target or if the assailant was aiming for another vehicle.

In a related discovery, police found a vehicle on another street with apparent bullet holes, though it remains unclear if this car was directly connected to the drive-by shooting.

The investigation is ongoing.
