The Plano Police Department issued a warning on the lasting consequences of driving under the influence after a recent incident involving a local resident. On September 8, 2020, at around 2:00 a.m., Plano police officers conducting a routine traffic stop faced a perilous situation when John Carroll, a 31-year-old Plano resident, collided with multiple police vehicles while traveling eastbound near the intersection of SH121 and Ridgeview Dr.
Plano Officer Retzer narrowly avoided the collision, recalling the close call as both vehicles sustained significant damage. Carroll was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. Subsequent investigation led the department to secure a warrant for Carroll's arrest, citing evidence indicating he was impaired at the time of the crash.
After a legal process that spanned over three years, on October 6, 2023, Carroll pleaded guilty to the charges against him. The court sentenced him to 180 days in jail and imposed a $3,000 fine.
The Plano Police Department emphasizes the importance of understanding one's impairment status and the potential for impaired judgment due to substances.
