After an extensive search and interview process, the Arlington Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees has unanimously chosen Dr. Matt Smith from Belton Independent School District (ISD) as the lone finalist for the position of superintendent.
Board of Trustees President Melody Fowler praised Smith’s credentials and leadership, highlighting his achievements in Belton ISD, including passing the largest bond in the district’s history, improving student outcomes, expanding career and technical learning opportunities, and establishing programs such as the Penguin Project, providing special needs students with the chance to participate in a theater production.
With over 20 years of experience in various administrative roles in education, Smith brings a wealth of knowledge to Arlington ISD.
“His dedication to student achievement, innovative educational practices, and fostering collaborative environments align seamlessly with Arlington ISD’s vision for the future,” said Fowler. “We know he will be a transformative leader and a great asset to the Arlington community.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Smith stated, “Arlington ISD has a storied history in Texas public schools, and I am truly humbled and grateful that the Board of Trustees welcomed me to the team. With students, staff, parents, and the community, we will build on Arlington ISD’s foundation of excellence for a thriving future. Together, with this wonderful team, we will do amazing things for our students, and I cannot wait to get started.”
Smith, holding a doctorate in School Leadership from Concordia University – Chicago, a master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Wesleyan College, began his career as a classroom teacher and coach. He has held progressive leadership positions, including principal, executive director of secondary education, chief of staff, chief academic officer, and superintendent.
As he assumes his new role in Arlington, Smith aims to build upon the district’s strengths while implementing strategies to enhance educational outcomes, foster inclusive learning environments, and strengthen community partnerships.
According to Texas state law, school districts must observe a 21-day waiting period before offering an official contract. Smith is scheduled to sign his contract on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.
