In the evening hours of October 9th, 2023, law enforcement officers from the Boyd Police Department and the Wise County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 100 block of Honeysuckle Road, Paradise, Texas. Upon arrival, the officers and deputies were fired upon by an individual inside the residence, and they returned fire.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies approached the home, identified themselves as Wise County Sheriff deputies, and were met with hostile language from a male voice inside. A gunshot was then heard from within the house, prompting the deputies to step back. A Boyd police officer arrived to support the deputies. Shortly afterward, the suspect was observed inside the home with a firearm. He fired multiple shots at the deputies, who responded by returning fire.
Following the exchange of gunfire, law enforcement officers entered the home, located the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Edward Lander, and provided immediate medical assistance. Wise County EMS arrived at the scene and attended to the suspect before he was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital. Despite medical intervention, Edward Lander succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Texas Rangers to determine the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting.
