In August of 2022, a manhunt ensued after a shooting incident in Prosper, Texas, resulting in the arrest of the suspect, Dwayne Kevin Sharlow, in New Jersey. The incident occurred on August 24, 2022, when a resident was shot while sitting in their car on Crestwood Drive. The victim survived.
On October 3, 2023, Sharlow pled guilty in Denton County Court to charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Violation of a Protective Order. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and 10 years for Violation of a Protective Order, with both sentences to be served concurrently.
Sharlow was apprehended without incident at approximately 1:52 p.m. (Eastern Time) by officers with the Bergen County Criminal Interdiction Unit on Interstate 95 North on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge. He was found in a rental car, which he had obtained shortly before the shooting, and was likely heading to New York City. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Bergen County New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office Narcotic Task Force Interdiction Unit, Texas Rangers, New Jersey State Police Department, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Police Department, and New York City Police Department, collaborated with the Prosper Police Department in tracking and arresting Sharlow.
At the time of arrest, Prosper Police Chief Doug Kowalski emphasized that while the community's thoughts and prayers are with the victim and their family, the incident should serve as a warning against violence. He stated that the attack was intentional and direct, but assured the public that there is no further threat. Chief Kowalski expressed confidence that removing individuals willing to carry out such acts makes the community safer. Sharlow is currently held in Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey, awaiting extradition to Denton County.
