A man is hospitalized after a Saginaw police officer opened fire during a welfare check that turned into a standoff Saturday morning, according to authorities. The incident happened around 11:26 a.m. at a home in the 300 block of Asbury Drive, a residential stretch of the North Tarrant County city located northwest of Fort Worth.
Police said dispatchers with the North East Tarrant Emergency Communications Center had warned responding officers that the man inside was in the midst of a mental health emergency and had reportedly tried to hurt himself. When officers reached the residence, they found the man holding what looked like a rifle. Despite efforts to talk him down, he moved toward the officers with the weapon, prompting one officer to fire a handgun and strike him.
Saginaw Fire Department crews and Fort Worth Fire Department personnel responded to treat the injured man, who was taken by ambulance to a hospital. His current condition has not been released.
Because the shooting involved a police officer, Texas Rangers with the Department of Public Safety are conducting an independent review and will forward their findings to the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office. The Saginaw Police Department is also running its own internal investigation into whether department policies were followed. The case remains open as both inquiries continue.
