IRVING, Texas - The City of Irving has secured an additional $35.6 million in state financing to continue construction of one of its largest flood mitigation projects, aimed at protecting neighborhoods and roadways along North Delaware Creek.
The Texas Water Development Board recently approved the low-cost financing, which city officials estimate will save Irving taxpayers approximately $5.4 million over the life of the loan.
The funding will support the next phase of the North Delaware Creek improvement project, including planning, engineering, land acquisition and construction of approximately 4,900 feet of upgraded drainage channel.
The project also includes replacing undersized culverts, reinforcing the creek channel, improving utility crossings and increasing the channel's capacity to carry stormwater during heavy rainfall.
City officials said the improvements are designed to reduce flooding risks for nearby homes, neighborhoods and roadways while strengthening Irving's overall stormwater infrastructure.
Once completed, the project is expected to provide 100-year flood protection, removing more than two dozen homes from the floodplain and significantly reducing the risk of flooding during major storm events.
The city said the additional financing allows Irving to accelerate one of its most significant infrastructure projects while improving long-term resilience against severe weather and future flooding.
