Domestic Violence Awareness and Support Resources

Domestic violence advocates say abuse can occur in any type of household or relationship regardless of age, race, gender, education level, or financial background.

According to national domestic violence organizations, millions of women experience abuse by an intimate partner each year in the United States, though advocates note men can also become victims of family violence.

Experts say abusive behavior often escalates over time and can include physical violence, threats, intimidation, emotional abuse, or controlling behavior. While alcohol or substance abuse may contribute to the frequency or severity of incidents, experts caution they are not considered the root cause of domestic violence.

Advocates also note many victims seek help through law enforcement, relatives, shelters, and community organizations while attempting to protect themselves and their children from continued abuse.
