Burglary Suspect Arrested After Foot Chase in Irving, Faces Parole Violation

Joshua Wayne Smith

IRVING, Texas — A man with an extensive criminal history was arrested early Saturday morning after a reported break-in and brief foot chase, according to Irving Police.

Officers responded in the early hours of April 4 to a burglary call and observed damage to a building upon arrival. Police located the suspect at the scene, who attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended by officers.

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Joshua Wayne Smith of Hurst, was booked into the Irving Jail at approximately 6:22 a.m.

Smith is charged with Burglary of a Building, a state felony, along with Criminal Mischief and Evading Arrest on Foot. After booking, authorities determined he was currently on parole, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice issued a parole violation.

Court records show that Smith has a history of prior arrests and convictions. In February 2026, he was convicted in a plea deal for theft at a Target store and sentenced to 10 days in the Dallas County Jail.

In March 2024, he was arrested for burglary of a building involving a liquor store and later received deferred adjudication probation. That probation was revoked in March 2025 following additional arrests, including charges in Collin County for theft and possession of fentanyl, resulting in a 180-day state jail sentence.

Before those cases, Smith served two years in prison from 2021 to 2023 after being convicted in Dallas County for assault involving strangulation of a family member with a prior conviction.
