FORT WORTH, Texas — A man wanted on multiple warrants was arrested after a police pursuit ended in a crash while he was driving the wrong way on a Fort Worth roadway.

According to police, officers attempted to stop 39-year-old Matthew Smith of Saginaw on Friday night, April 3. Smith, who had nine outstanding warrants, fled in a Chevrolet Avalanche.

During the pursuit, Smith drove southbound in the northbound lanes of the I-35W service road. Near West Rosedale Street, he crashed into the end of an exit ramp.

The impact trapped both Smith and his 29-year-old passenger inside the vehicle. Fort Worth Fire Department crews responded and extricated both individuals before transporting them to a local hospital. Authorities said both sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

After being released from the hospital, Smith was booked into the Tarrant County Jail.

He is charged with Evading Arrest or Detention Causing Serious Bodily Injury due to injuries sustained by his passenger. His outstanding warrants were related to charges including Theft, Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of Meth and Fentanyl.
