Irving Fire Department's 'Road Warriors' Actively Shield Crews on Major Highways

The Irving Fire Department is actively deploying an innovative "Blocker Program," leveraging retired fire engines as crucial shields for crews working at highway accidents. This proactive safety measure underscores the department's high priority on first responder protection, particularly as they respond to over 2,000 major accidents annually, with nearly 40% necessitating a dedicated blocker vehicle.

In a resourceful move, the Irving Fire Department has repurposed older fire engines—vehicles that would typically be sold at auction after their frontline service. These "blocker" engines are now strategically positioned at accident scenes, serving as an invaluable extra layer of defense for firefighters and paramedics against potential impacts from traffic. This initiative directly addresses the inherent dangers faced by emergency personnel on busy roadways.

"These vehicles are our 'Road Warriors,' and they embody our commitment to keeping our firefighters safe," stated an Irving Fire Department representative. "When a blocker is struck by another vehicle, it's a stark reminder that it just provided lifesaving protection for our personnel working on the roadway." To acknowledge this vital role, any blocker engine that sustains an impact is adorned with a special "Road Warrior" decal.

The department continues to stress the critical role drivers play in ensuring the safety of emergency responders. Distracted driving, particularly texting, remains a significant threat. Motorists are reminded of the essential "Move Over, Slow Down" law: when you see flashing emergency lights on the highway, move to an adjacent lane if it's safe to do so, or significantly reduce your speed.

"Your awareness and caution can literally save a life," the department urges. "That text can wait! Please help us protect those who are dedicated to protecting our community."
