28-Year-Old Marine Corps Recruiter Drowns Near Pier 121 Marina on Lake Lewisville

Emergency crews recovered the body of a 28-year-old man on Sunday, June 29, following a reported drowning near the Pier 121 Marina on Lake Lewisville.

Lewisville 9-1-1 received a call around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, June 28, reporting that a man had gone underwater and failed to resurface while swimming near a vessel. The Lewisville Fire Department and Texas Game Wardens responded to the scene and launched rescue boats, but were unable to locate the man that evening.

On Sunday, game wardens, assisted by Towboat U.S., located the man’s body around noon. Divers from the Lewisville Fire Department recovered the body.

The victim was identified as Cleveland Whiteside III of McKinney, originally from Tchula, Mississippi. According to the Texas Game Wardens in Denton County, Whiteside was swimming back to a boat with a woman when he went under.

Whiteside joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2016 and had been working in North Texas as a Marine Corps recruiter for the past two years.
