A man was fatally shot on Sunday, June 15, after allegedly attempting to burglarize a business in the 2500 block of E. I-20 and trying to run over the off-duty police officer who owns the property, according to Weatherford Police.
At approximately 1:00 p.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at the location. Preliminary findings indicate the business owner, an off-duty officer with the Arlington Police Department, arrived to find a man loading items from the business into a vehicle.
When the off-duty officer attempted to intervene, the suspect allegedly got into his vehicle and attempted to run him over. In response, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect.
The alleged intruder was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Due to the involvement of an off-duty officer, the Texas Rangers are assisting Weatherford Police in the investigation.
The identity of the deceased has not been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
