The City of Decatur and Decatur Police Department have been notified by the Texas Department of Health Services regarding a potential public health concern after a Wise County resident purchased a shepherd puppy in the Walmart parking lot on February 7, 2025.
The puppy became ill shortly after being acquired and was ultimately euthanized. Testing indicated the presence of a potentially hazardous disease, though officials have not been able to definitively identify it. As a precaution, the affected family is undergoing preventative treatment.
Authorities urge anyone who purchased a puppy from the same seller at that location and date to contact Decatur Animal Control for further information and guidance. Officials emphasize that there is no known outbreak, and the situation is being monitored.
The City of Decatur reminds residents that selling or giving away animals in public places is prohibited under local ordinances designed to prevent such risks.
