A standoff between McKinney Police Department officers and an armed, suicidal individual with outstanding warrants ended peacefully after approximately three hours on Thursday, March 21st. The incident began around 8:18am near Highway 380 and Woodlawn Road when officers responded to reports of the individual barricaded inside a tent.
To ensure public safety and address threats made by the individual towards officers, the McKinney SWAT Team was deployed, along with other departmental resources including the Negotiations Team and the Community Services Unit specializing in mental health responses. A DPS helicopter was also utilized during the standoff.
The situation concluded when the individual set fire to the tent. Officers extinguished the fire and safely took the individual into custody, prioritizing both their safety and that of the surrounding community.
