Beginning Thursday, January 25, a section of Hillcrest Road in North Dallas will close for 52 weeks as part of the ongoing Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Silver Line project. The closure, spanning a 1/5-mile stretch between McCallum Boulevard and Wester Way, is necessary for the construction of a grade-separated rail crossing at Hillcrest.
DART and the City of Dallas have collaborated to ensure the safety of the public and construction crews during this period. The closure will be in effect from January 25, 2024, to January 24, 2025, with no access to Hillcrest Road between McCallum Boulevard and Wester Way.
Detour routes will guide commuters to Coit Road on the east and Preston Road on the west of Hillcrest Road, with limited access from McKamy Boulevard. Emergency access points for Dallas Fire Rescue and the Dallas Police Department will be strategically placed throughout the construction site to ensure public safety.
The affected area is near the City of Richardson border and falls within Plano Independent School District attendance zones. DART has maintained regular communication with city and school district officials in Richardson and Plano, providing updates on construction progress and safety measures. Nearby cities with frequent commuters to the area are also receiving updates from DART. Digital road signs warning of the upcoming closure have been in place since late December.
Dee Leggett, DART chief development officer, emphasized the priority of public safety during the temporary road closure. The limited work area and extensive excavation required necessitate precautions for the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and construction teams. The goal is to complete the construction swiftly and safely, returning Hillcrest Road to normal traffic conditions while advancing the Silver Line project.
The DART Silver Line is a 26-mile commuter rail that spans seven North Texas cities, including Grapevine, Coppell, Dallas, Carrollton, Addison, Richardson, and Plano. Connecting DFW Airport to Shiloh Road in Plano, the regional rail alignment crosses Collin, Dallas, and Tarrant counties. The Silver Line aims to enhance mobility and accessibility across the northern portion of the DART service area, with revenue service scheduled to commence from late 2025 to mid-2026.
