Grand Prairie Man Convicted of Intoxicated Manslaughter in Death of Smith County Deputy; Sentenced to 32 Years in Prison

Daniel Nyabuto

In a Smith County court on Tuesday afternoon, January 9, 2024, Daniel Nyabuto of Grand Prairie, originally from Kenya, was found guilty of intoxicated manslaughter. Nyabuto had pleaded not guilty to the charge back in December. The trial, which spanned eight days, concluded on December 15, and the jury reconvened on January 9 for closing arguments and deliberations.

The prosecutors presented evidence that Nyabuto was driving under the influence when he rear-ended a patrol unit, leading to the death of Smith County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Lorenzo Bustos. Deputy Bustos was completing his final night of training at the time of the incident. Nyabuto has been sentenced to 32 years in prison, and the jury took just under four hours to reach this decision.
