Students in grades 3-12 in the City of Irving are invited to participate in the 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest. This annual event, organized by the City of Irving, aims to celebrate and reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and his Nobel Peace Prize.

The theme for this year's contest is "60 Years of Illuminating Change: Celebrating Dr. King’s Nobel Peace Prize Legacy." Participants are encouraged to delve into the enduring impact of Dr. King’s work, highlighting the progress made over the years and addressing the challenges that still persist.

Essays submitted for the contest should not exceed 500 words and will be evaluated based on clarity, grammar, and the depth of understanding of Dr. King's legacy. The vision for the future, as inspired by Dr. King's principles, is also expected to be explored.

As part of the contest, participants will be divided into three age categories: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. Contestants are urged to submit their essays by the deadline on January 2, 2024.

Winners of the essay contest will have the opportunity to read their winning compositions during a special observance scheduled for January 13, 2024, at 6 p.m. The event will take place at Carpenter Performance Hall in the Irving Arts Center, located at 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd.
