DALLAS - Senior Cpl. Ray Cunningham, a longtime Dallas police officer who served the department for nearly four decades, died Friday morning while off duty, the Dallas Police Department announced.
Cunningham, badge No. 5615, joined the department in 1987 and most recently served with the South-Central Patrol Division.
During his career, Cunningham became a longtime trainer and mentor to other Dallas officers. The department said he was known for sharing his experience and guidance with officers he trained and worked alongside.
Dallas police described Cunningham as a respected member of the department whose mentorship and care for his colleagues made an impact throughout his career.
"His presence, mentorship, and genuine care for his fellow coworkers made him a valued member of the Dallas Police Department family," the department said in announcing his death.
Cunningham had served Dallas for approximately 39 years at the time of his death.
The department did not disclose Cunningham's age or cause of death, saying only that he died while off duty on the morning of Sept. 11.
