Irving Police Arrest Homeless Woman on Drug Paraphernalia Charges, Uncovers Multiple Warrants

In the early hours of Sunday, January 21, 2024, at approximately 3:39 am, an Irving Police Officer arrested a homeless woman for possession of drug paraphernalia. The arrest took place in the 4100 block of W. Airport Frwy at the entrance of the Walmart parking lot. The officer initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with an expired registration, and the driver was identified as 47-year-old Melissa Rena Newman.

Upon inspection during the stop, the officer observed visible drug paraphernalia. Further investigation using the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database revealed that Melissa Rena Newman had six class C misdemeanor warrants related to two dogs she owned. These warrants were for charges such as animal at large, animal without a vaccine tag, and lack of animal registration. Additionally, she had a felony warrant issued by the Dallas County Sheriff's Office for burglary of a building.

As a result, Melissa Rena Newman was taken into custody. On January 22nd, she was transferred to the Dallas County Jail to face the burglary of building charge, with a bond set at $1,500.
