Arlington Officer Fatally Shoots Knife-Wielding Man During Welfare Check

Arlington, Texas - A man died Thursday night after an Arlington police officer opened fire on him during a call about a person in crisis, according to department officials.

Arlington police said officers were sent to a residence in the 1700 block of West Lovers Lane, near the area around Cooper Street and Arlington's Lovers Lane corridor, at approximately 10:45 p.m. in response to a report of a suicidal individual. While responding to the scene, an officer discharged his firearm at the man after he was found carrying a knife.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No officers were hurt during the encounter.

As required whenever an officer uses lethal force, the Arlington Police Department has opened two separate inquiries into the shooting. The department's Homicide Unit will conduct a criminal review to determine if any laws were broken, while the Internal Affairs Unit will carry out a parallel administrative review to assess whether officers adhered to department policy and procedure.
