Parolee Charged After Driving Over 100 MPH Before Causing Serious Crash in Irving

Freeman Lynn Jones

IRVING, Texas — An Irving man on parole is facing multiple felony charges after police say he drove more than 100 mph, caused a serious crash that left another driver with a brain injury, and was found in possession of prescription narcotics.

According to the Irving Police Department, an officer responded at approximately 6:35 a.m. on June 17 after observing a black Chevrolet Impala that had been involved in a major crash on northbound State Highway 161 near West Rochelle Road.

Witnesses told investigators the Impala had been traveling at more than 100 mph on the improved shoulder before suddenly swerving into the second lane and striking two vehicles.

One of the victims was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, where doctors determined the driver had suffered a brain bleed.

While Irving Fire Department personnel were assisting at the scene, officers observed the driver of the Impala, identified as 43-year-old Freeman Lynn Jones, discarding several white pills underneath his vehicle.

The pills were collected as evidence and later identified as Hydrocodone Bitartrate/Acetaminophen, a Penalty Group 3 controlled substance under Texas law. Police said Jones admitted he did not have a prescription for the medication.

Investigators reported Jones appeared disoriented and confused, making statements that he was "in heaven with his father" and repeatedly attempting to return to his vehicle.

After being medically cleared by Irving Fire Department personnel, Jones denied consuming any substances or having any medical condition that would explain his behavior.

An officer conducted a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test and observed all six clues of intoxication, along with vertical nystagmus, according to the arrest report.

Based on the investigation, Jones was arrested and booked into the Irving Jail.

He is charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Driving While Intoxicated, and Possession of a Penalty Group 3 Controlled Substance under 28 grams.

Authorities also determined Jones was on parole at the time of the crash, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has lodged a parole violation hold against him.
