As coyote mating season begins, Dallas residents are being urged to be extra vigilant, as coyotes may be more visible and vocal while protecting their territories and families.
Coyotes have adapted to living near people and are increasingly venturing into neighborhoods in search of food. As a result, they may appear in yards or other community spaces, especially in areas with high coyote activity, such as White Rock Lake.
Dallas Animal Services advises dog owners to take several precautions to reduce the risk of negative interactions with coyotes:
- Always keep dogs on a leash.
- Supervise pets when they are in a fenced-in yard.
- Avoid walking dogs near creek lines or through empty fields.
- Never allow dogs to run loose in areas with elevated coyote activity.
If residents encounter a coyote, they are encouraged to scare it away by yelling, waving their arms, and throwing objects near, but not at, the animal.
For effective management of coyote conflicts, Dallas Animal Services emphasizes the importance of community education, preventive measures, and hazing.
To report a coyote sighting, residents can call 469-676-9813. If a coyote is found sick or injured, they should contact 311 for assistance.
