20-Year-Old Sentenced to 13 Years for Fatal Dallas Crash After Running Red Light

Raymond Olagues

Raymond Olagues, 20, pleaded guilty to Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in connection with a deadly collision on October 16, 2023, that claimed the life of Juan Rivas and injured a passenger. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison, with the court affirming a deadly weapon finding for his use of a motor vehicle.

The incident occurred as Olagues, driving a 1997 Toyota pickup truck, sped through downtown Dallas after leaving the AT&T Discovery District. Witnesses, including his passenger, reported he ignored repeated pleas to slow down while traveling over 60 mph in a 40 mph zone. At the intersection of Lake June Road and North Prairie Creek Road, Olagues ran a red light and collided with two vehicles.

The impact ignited a fire in the victim's vehicle, killing Rivas at the scene. Olagues’ passenger, rescued by good Samaritans, suffered a fractured knee. Toxicology reports revealed Olagues had alcohol and THC in his system at the time.

Prosecutor Kristin Treager led the case, assisted by DA investigators Ron Cathcart and Bill Martinez and paralegal Maria Cantrell. The Dallas Police Department conducted the investigation.
