Nelson Martinez, a 2019 graduate of Singley Academy in Irving, is set to showcase his baking talents on the Food Network’s Christmas Cookie Challenge, competing for $10,000 and the title of the nation’s best holiday cookie maker. Martinez, whose passion for baking was nurtured in Singley’s culinary arts program, credits much of his success to the mentorship of Irving ISD educators.
“At Singley, I was involved in the culinary and hospitality program, where I gained valuable industry experience that is helping me succeed in life,” Martinez shared.
Culinary instructor Jared Cappers praised Martinez, saying, “Nelson was a great student, very passionate about culinary, baking, and hospitality. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s been successful after graduation.”
Martinez also expressed gratitude to other influential educators, including Chef Ann Lowrie and instructors Mr. Moore and Mrs. Hornbuckle. “I wouldn’t be able to be here if it wasn’t for their help,” he said.
Martinez’s journey highlights the impact of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in public schools like Irving ISD. “I think students should choose Irving ISD because it has a wonderful program. The people are inviting, the teachers are great—you really can’t go wrong with attending one of these schools,” he said.
Cappers encouraged students to consider Singley’s programs, noting, “We’re work-based learning. We run a restaurant four days a week, open for breakfast three days a week, and do catering in the evenings. If you come through our programs, get your certifications, and gain experience here in a safe environment, you’ll have skills to earn a livable wage and be ahead of your peers.”
Martinez’s television journey began when he was scouted by the Food Network. “I didn’t know which show I’d be on, but I took the chance, and two or three months later, they called me for the Christmas Cookie Challenge season 8.”
