Fort Worth Councilmember Calls for Transparency in City Manager Selection Process

Councilmember Jared Williams

On December 8, 2024, Fort Worth City Councilmember Dr. Jared Williams issued a public statement expressing concern over the lack of transparency and public involvement in the ongoing selection process for the city's next City Manager.

In his statement, Dr. Williams emphasized his commitment to transparency and meaningful public engagement, values he has upheld throughout his tenure representing District 6. Highlighting past examples of public involvement during the selection processes for the Police Chief and the Director of the Office of Police Oversight Monitor, Williams pointed out that those processes included public input, independent consulting firms, and opportunities for residents to engage directly with finalists.

"This time, the process has been markedly different," Williams stated, referencing the short notice given to the public before the upcoming vote. He called the approach rushed and opaque, warning it could undermine public trust and confidence in city leadership.

Williams reaffirmed his belief that decisions impacting the community should reflect public values and input. He vowed to continue advocating for transparency, collaboration, and accountability in Fort Worth's decision-making processes.

The selection of a City Manager is one of the most significant decisions for the city's leadership. Dr. Williams urged the City Council to honor the principles of openness and public participation as the process moves forward.
