The countdown to Christmas has officially begun at the Irving Police Department, and officers are already in the holiday spirit! Thanks to their generous partners at Target Store Irving, officers had the opportunity to shop with special children and stock up for the annual Blue Christmas event.
The Police Department expressed a heartfelt "thank you" to several outstanding individuals who also made donations to the Irving Police and Fire Blue Christmas fund while officers were shopping. The outpouring of kindness from the community continues to inspire and support this holiday initiative.
Irving Police & Fire Blue Christmas: A Tradition of Giving
The Irving Police & Fire Blue Christmas tradition began in 1979, when Irving Police Officer Becky Fann, while working in the community, identified several families who had fallen on hard times. Realizing these families wouldn’t be able to afford Christmas gifts for their children, Becky made it her mission to provide a Christmas meal and gifts for those in need. Through the support of her peers and generous donations, Becky was able to assist 25 families, and thus, the Blue Christmas initiative was born.
After retiring from the Irving Police Department in 2004, Becky’s dedication to Blue Christmas only grew stronger. She expanded the program by organizing fundraisers like the Annual Chili Cookoff and Pancake Breakfast, and by securing corporate sponsors. Over the years, Irving has responded to Becky’s efforts with successful food drives, toy drives, and community events aimed at helping those in need.
For 40 years, Blue Christmas has brought joy to thousands of families, with Becky Fann leading the charge. Although Becky passed away in January 2020, her legacy of selfless service continues to shine through Blue Christmas, inspiring the community to support the less fortunate during the holiday season.
