American Airlines and Citi have announced the extension of their 37-year co-branded partnership, solidifying their collaboration for the next decade. Beginning in 2026, Citi will become the exclusive issuer of the AAdvantage® co-branded credit card portfolio in the United States, expanding their relationship to offer even more value to both AAdvantage® and Citi-branded cardmembers.
Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines, expressed pride in the historic partnership, which began with the launch of the first airline loyalty program and the travel industry’s first co-branded credit card. "The strength of our relationship with Citi has enabled us to deliver first-class products and customer service to millions of AAdvantage cardmembers," Isom said. "This expanded partnership will unlock even more value and exciting new benefits for all of our customers in the future."
As part of the agreement, Citi will acquire the Barclays American Airlines co-branded card portfolio and begin transitioning cardmembers to Citi's portfolio in 2026. Current Barclays cardmembers will continue to receive the same benefits, and further details on the transition will be shared in the coming months. This acquisition is expected to drive significant growth for Citi’s Branded Cards business.
The partnership will also align the Citi ThankYou and AAdvantage® card programs, enhancing the loyalty and rewards offering for both companies' cardmembers. Citi will manage all American Airlines acquisition channels, including inflight and at airports, ensuring greater reach and customer engagement.

The expanded Citi®/AAdvantage® card portfolio offers a range of options, including the American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Card, Citi®/AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, and the Citi®/AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.
