31-year-old Jordy Jose Estrada was found guilty of murder in the January 2022 shooting of his best friend, Octavio Velazquez. The trial, led by prosecutors Stephen Duplantis and James Worley, revealed unsettling details of the night that led to Velazquez's death.
According to evidence presented by the Dallas Police Department, Estrada invited Velazquez over to his home on January 23, 2022, encouraging him to sleep with his wife. However, after the encounter, Estrada became enraged and threw his wife out of the house. Armed with a gun, Estrada chased after her, only to find Velazquez still in the parking lot, waiting. Estrada shot Velazquez once in the back of the head.
At trial, Estrada claimed that the shooting was both accidental and in self-defense, a strategy that did not convince the jury. During the punishment phase, he argued that his actions were the result of sudden passion, but the jury again disagreed.
On September 17, 2024, Estrada was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison. DA Investigator Derek Bryant and paralegal Kim Barr provided crucial support to the prosecution throughout the trial.
