On November 11, 2021, a group of four individuals, Camron Range, James Levels, Janiya Miller, and Jacoby Tatum, embarked on a crime spree that swept across Dallas, targeting multiple victims over a span of three and a half hours. The spree began at South Oak Cliff High School (SOC) when two 14-year-old students were held at gunpoint by Miller as they crossed the street. Miller demanded their cell phones and a necklace, threatening to shoot if they did not comply.
The group, traveling in a stolen truck, then moved on to North Park Mall. One of the SOC robbery victims tracked her phone using the Find My iPhone app and alerted her parents, who sought help from an off-duty Dallas Police Department officer at the mall. The officer provided patrol units with real-time updates on the victim’s phone location.
At approximately 6:20 p.m., the defendants left the mall and followed a woman to the Macy's parking garage. Camron Range approached the victim with a gun, demanding her phone and wallet. When she resisted, Levels and Tatum assisted Range in forcibly removing her from her vehicle. The attack, captured on surveillance footage, prompted the defendants to flee in the stolen truck.
Their final stop was the Costco Business Center, where, at 6:45 p.m., Range and Levels held another victim at gunpoint while he was loading groceries into his SUV. During a struggle, Range shot and killed the victim. The group later abandoned the truck at an apartment complex in North Dallas. With the help of the North Park officer tracking the stolen phone, law enforcement was able to locate and arrest the suspects near the abandoned vehicle.
Camron Range pleaded guilty to the murder at Costco and the aggravated robbery at North Park, receiving a 60-year and 30-year sentence, respectively. James Levels also pleaded guilty to both crimes, receiving a 40-year sentence for the murder and 25 years for the robbery. Janiya Miller, who participated in the initial SOC robbery and drove the stolen truck during the crime spree, pleaded guilty to the murder and received 35 years, along with 25 years for the SOC aggravated robberies.
Jacoby Tatum, the last of the group, faced a jury trial for his role in the North Park aggravated robbery. He was convicted and sentenced to probation.
